5 STAGES OF CKD
THE 5 STAGES OF CHRONIC KIDNEY DISEASE
The kidneys act as one of the major filtering systems in the body. They filter excess toxins, waste products, and water from the blood and remove them through the urine. Kidneys also help regulate blood pressure, electrolytes, and play a large role in the production of red blood cells.
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) means your kidneys do not work normally. This could mean your kidneys have trouble filtering or they leak protein or blood into your urine. There are usually no symptoms of CKD until you reach stage 4 or stage 5.
Providers diagnose CKD through blood tests or urine tests. Blood tests measure your creatinine and your GFR (Glomerular Filtration Rate). The GFR is a measure of how well the kidneys are filtering. This will help determine the stage of your kidney disease. Urine tests look for signs of protein or blood.
