TeleNephrology vs. TeleHealth – What’s the Difference?

TeleNephrology

TeleNephrology is a specialized form of telemedicine focused specifically on kidney care. It involves real-time consultations with your nephrologist through secure technologies such as video conferencing, phone calls, or internet-based platforms. These visits allow our providers at Carolina Nephrology, PA to evaluate, monitor, and manage your kidney health without in-person contact.

TeleHealth

TeleHealth is a broader category that includes not only clinical care but also non-clinical services, such as provider training, administrative meetings, and continuing medical education. TeleHealth can be provided through live audio and video visits, as well as through “store-and-forward” technology, where medical information is securely transmitted and reviewed later.

We offer:

  • Emergency appointments at multiple office locations
  • Same-day hospital consultations when a patient is admitted
  • Coordinated care with primary care physicians and other specialists to ensure a comprehensive treatment plan

Treatment may be as straightforward as discontinuing a harmful medication, providing IV fluids for rehydration, or, in more severe cases, implementing advanced therapies to support kidney function and recovery.

Getting Started with TeleNephrology via the pMD App:

  1. You will receive a text message from pMD letting you know your doctor has sent a HIPPA-compliant text message. To view the message, tap on the link provided. The link will take you to the App Store to download the pMD application.
  2. Once the application is downloaded, tap to open. You will be prompted to enter your cell phone number.
  3. A verification code will then be sent to you via text message. Tap the link in the text message or enter the verification code on the following screen in the pMD application.
  4. You will then have the option to use FaceID/Touch ID or create a password to log into pMD. If creating a password, it must contain at least 10 characters and should include at least 3 of the 4 categories (upper case letter, lower case letter, number, and symbol).
