What is Vein Mapping?
Vein mapping is a painless, non-invasive ultrasound exam that creates a detailed image of the veins in your arms. It helps your care team determine which veins are suitable for creating a hemodialysis access, such as a fistula or graft.

When to Schedule Vein Mapping
Your provider may recommend this test if:
- You are approaching the need for dialysis
- You’ve had previous access complications
- You’re planning surgery to place a fistula or graft
What to Expect
- The test is performed in our vascular lab
- No needles, dyes, or radiation involved
- Takes about 30–45 minutes
- A technician applies gel and moves a small device over your arm to visualize your veins
After the Exam
- Results are reviewed by your vascular specialist
- Recommendations are shared with your nephrologist and surgical team
- Next steps are discussed during your follow-up appointment

Why is Vein Mapping Important?
- Identifies the best vein for creating long lasting access
- Helps avoid unnecessary surgeries or complications
- Ensures personalized, effective dialysis planning
- Often required prior to AV fistula or graft placement
